The Shay Cochrane Photography Beginner Professional’s Workshop is for “beginner professionals” in the portrait and wedding photography industries. This workshop is ideal for photographers who are in the beginning stages (0-3 years) of building a business with actual paid clientele! The Beginner Professional’s Workshop will consist of a relaxed classroom session followed by an on-location mock couple’s session where workshop attendees will be able to put what they have learned into practice and get hands on help while shooting the fabulous models we provide!

- Baby steps for transitioning from Auto to shooting in Manual mode with confidence
- Techniques and tricks for metering to nail the perfect exposure every time. No more dark or blurry images!
- How to know which gear investments are right for you
- The trick to getting images that “pop” right out of camera eliminating the need for hours spent in Photoshop (YAY!)
- Posing and interaction coaching for getting natural looking emotion out of your clients
- Tools and tricks for working with natural lighting on location for the best images possible both indoors and out
- Your primary DSLR camera and any lenses that you prefer to shoot with
- Bring additional memory cards and batteries as needed
- Please also bring your camera’s user manual
- If you have a shoot sac or travel bag you may want to bring that as well for the on location shoot portion of the workshop
What is the general workshop schedule?
8:45am | arrive, settle in, grab a snack (light snacks provided!)
9:00 – 11:30 | classroom portion
11:30 – 12:15 | debrief and discussion over lunch (lunch provided!)
12:30 – 2:00pm | hands on practice and instruction during mock couple’s session. Model’s provided!

What is the cost to attend the Beginner Pro’s Workshop?
The SCP Beginner Professional’s Photography Workshop is limited to only 10 attendees for both our Virginia and Florida workshop locations. This is to ensure that every workshop attendee gets personalized one-on-one instruction according to their skill level in a relaxed environment. Workshop tuition for this five hour intensive workshop is $300 per person and includes both the classroom and shoot portion of the workshop. Light snacks and lunch will be provided.
What if I need more individualized help with the business side of my photography?
This workshop will focus primarily on shooting technique to both build your confidence as well as immediately benefit your skill level and final product as a photographer. As a supplement to the workshop I will be offering a limited number of 60 minute one-on-one consultations the weekend of the workshop for those interested in more in-depth and personalized business development. Consultations will be custom tailored to fit individual needs and can include personalized portfolio review to improve current branding and web presence as well as identify strengths and weaknesses in your current portfolio with the goal of identifying your style and streamlining to present your very best to potential clients. In addition, I will take an in depth look at your current pricing structure and business goals and put action steps in place for increased profits and professional growth. Again, these consultations are highly personalized and will be tailored to focus on what you feel are the most pressing needs of your business. Individual consultation sessions are $100 per 60 minute session and can be booked at the time of registration. They will be scheduled the weekend of the conference according to availability.
Who is Shay Cochrane anyway!?
I have been doing wedding and portrait photography professionally in both Virginia and Florida for 7 years now. My work has been featured on various wedding blogs and online magazines. I currently live in Tampa, FL with my husband Graham and our sweet, curly haired, songstress/comedian/2 yr old ball of energy, Chloe, with another baby on the way in February of 2012! I first started offering workshops in the Spring of 2011 with the first workshop beginner professionals workshop being a huge success! This year I am adding an additional workshop to better meet the needs of the average hobbiest who wants to learn more but is not interested in becoming a professional photographer. My reason for offering these workshops is that I genuinely think that as professionals we should be willing to share our secrets to help each other grow! I am very open and honest about how I have gotten this far and what makes my business successful and I genuinely enjoy helping others to grow in both their skill level and business savvy.
