Gone are the days when the point of the engagement portrait was to get a “nice” picture to put with your engagement announcement in the local paper.  Today’s e-sessions are the chance to capture vividly, who you are as a couple, your “style”, what it is that makes you guys unique.  As someone who is about to celebrate 5 years of marriage and 8 years total with my college sweetheart…our lives (while still awesome) are very different from those early days – the places we used to eat, the way we would spend our time, the little things and places that were meaningful to us.  So the point of an engagement session becomes way more than capturing what you look like – it is a chance to encapsulate this exciting and fleeting season in your relationship together.  With that said, you have a super fun opportunity to work with your photographer to create a style and theme for your engagement session that is uniquely you!   Justin & Mary Marantz said it perfectly in their interview on the Style Me Pretty blog…

“You take out the hot rollers and plug in the flat iron. Your brow furrows as you mentally debate the merits of a rainbow of Mac eye shadows scattered across the bathroom sink. Do you feel like being “Bold & Brazen” today or do you just want to make a “Grand Entrance”? Either way, surely you should “Jest.” You pack five different pairs of black pointy-toed shoes into an already over-stuffed canvas bag because you just can’t decide which one is the most YOU right now. You hold outfit after outfit up to your bewildered fiance, whose sighs are growing more and more audible with each passing color combination. The brown definitely brings out his eyes…too bad it also brings out his hair, which he forgot to get cut this week. You tousle it in the front because, y’know, that messy look is in right now, and race out the door pulling enough luggage behind you to backpack through Europe.   And all the while. all you can think is, “I hope these pictures feel like…us.”

The engagement shoot can be a stressful time. We get that. You want them to look great, but you also want them to look natural. You’re not too big on being in front of the camera, but you want it to look like you didn’t even know (or care) that a camera was there. You have no idea what to wear or what to do, but all you really want at the end of the day is to look back at the pictures and go “wow, that’s so us.” And fifty years from now, you hope you’ll still be saying the same thing.”

I love the process of getting to know my couples and designing a shoot that is completely them.  It can be a place that you love, something unique that you love to do together, where you met, favorite hobbies that you share.  EVERY couple has something that makes them unique and THAT is what makes a beautiful and meaningful engagement session.  Here are a few fun ideas from previous clients of mine.  I can’t wait to work with you on YOUR engagement shoot!

What is it that makes you guys “you”?  Where is that special place that you love to visit together?  A favorite memory or experience that defines your relationship?  A hobby?  A shared passion?  Your Saturday night tradition?  It can be as simple as doing laundry at the laundromat or playing board games on your apartment floor!  If you were to do a themed shoot what would you want to include to make it uniquely “you” ?
